A Story by Michele Kreinheder | Updated 09/8/2014 8:57pm
Yesterday was the 25th Anniversary of the Belmont Shore Car Show and now I am sorry I missed the first 24! We left our Los Altos home and walked through Whaley Park, headed south on Bellflower, crossed PCH into Alamitos Heights, continued down the hill to Appian Way and squiggled through Belmont Shore to 2nd Street. This scenic three mile walk left us just parched enough to rationalize a mid-day refreshment. The cars were amazingly beautiful and interesting (funeral hearse from the 50's should have won a prize) but it was relaxing on the patio at Boubouffe's we found most appealing. Other than the Belmont Shore Christmas Parade this is the only time 2nd Street is completely shutdown to vehicles. My husband pointed out the irony that we were enjoying the street without traffic only due to the fact that it was for a car show! We didn't dwell on the thought for too long but instead continued to enjoy the day. Nothing like appetizers and chilled wine to make for a happy Sunday.
By 3:00 the cars are revving up and leaving but the road stayed closed till 5:00. They say 40,000 cars transverse 2nd Street on a normal Sunday. so this closure inconveniences many, but what a great way to showcase what is arguably the heart of Long Beach. For the return trip we walked the route in reverse but if we wanted to take a taxi we can always remember the phone number 562-444-4444 to Long Beach Taxi. They have the nice clean Prius and the drivers are nice and polite. With so many events happening in Long Beach it is hard to get to them all but this Car Show really is one of the best.
