I have an deep emotional attachment to Whaley Park. You see years ago I chose the route of stay-at-home mom so Whaley became my daily place of business, if you will. So tonight when I took a walk with Buddy I decided check out the Poly League field improvements, I was walking on very familiar ground.
I knew that one-time oil reserve money of about $400,000 was the cost, which seemed excessive, but being there tonight has me singing a different tune. And I hear the lowest bidder was selected so perhaps this is the going rate for new fencing, dugouts, sod, lights and bleachers. If the women's bathroom, which I remember being unusable from my park days, was included in the price, I am a true believer.
He wasn't looking for any recognition, but I have it on good word that Wilson High graduate, Blue Jay draftee and all-around good guy, Chase DeJong wanted to give back to the community and generously donated the impressive score board. Touching story, for a park and field, that has touched so many lives.
Special thanks to Scott Chamberlain, coach of the 2012 World Pony League Long Beach Champion, for his years of support of Long Beach youth and choosing to visit Washington PA just one more time :).
Opening Day will be a special one. Festivities start at 11 am on Sunday, March 16. Whaley Park
