Chat-with-Pat in Los Altos
I like to get this synopsis out asap while the meeting is fresh in my mind, but unfortunately I got a bit busy this week.
Let me start out by saying that the best news to come out of the meeting was the announcement by the Park & Rec's 100 Days of Summer
Bureau Chief. Hold onto your hats folks! Fantastic Diamond is returning to Whaley Park on September 8. If you missed this Neil Diamond impersonator from years past, you don't want to miss him this time. Sweet Caroline! It is going to be a 'Party in Park' in September!
The meeting started as usual with an update by our crew in blue. Lieutenant Davidson, who is just as witty and entertaining as Sergeant Beckman, gave us a quick run down on crime. The iHop was robbed on Sunday June 2 at 9:30 in the evening. Davidson labeled it a totally random event - white male in this mid-40's, just walking down the road decided to stage a holdup with a pretend gun - How bizarre!
The woman who returned to her home on Marita last week to find two well-dress, nice-automobile driving thieves climbing out her window dialed 911. According to our fearless leader Patrick, the best number to call is our Police Dispatch at 562-435-6711. Take a moment and plug that puppy into your smart phones.
Taco Beach Food was Served
Next up to the lectern was Kevin Vance, owner and operator of the new Taco Beach 'establishment' located on Bellflower, across from iHop and Lazy Acres. He had come bearing gifts of free tacos, salad, rice and beans, which just about everyone partook and appreciated.
Patrick O'Donnell quickly blew through the following updates:
- Atherton Median upgrade proceeding. No more trees to be removed. Paving from Palo Verde to Bellflower upon completion.
- Frisco's Restaurant located by the Von's on Los Coyotes and Ximeno is closed. Market Place Grill & Cafe opening soon in its place. He thinks it is high-end American fare, i.e. fancy hamburgers.
- Baby Bro's Pizza and Ribs at the corner of Clark & PCH is moving, ever so slowly, towards completion.
- California's Writers Club
is hosting Hector Tobar this Saturday at 3:00
dogs want to hear you read on the 4th Saturday of each month at the Los Altos Library
Next we had representatives from the OCTA (Orange County Transit Authority) talk first about the current project that has the 405, 22 connectors, Seal Beach Blvd Bridge under construction, followed by an update on the planning of the 405 improvement from the 605 to the 73.
The biggest news is the warning that the 405 will be closed for a 20 hour period sometime in the near future for the destruction of the existing Seal Beach Bridge. They will close 6 pm on a Saturday and re-open on Sunday around 3 pm. Here is the link to a detour map. Someone in the audience raised their hand to compliment the OCTA on their accomplishments to date. I have to agree that this construction has not been nearly as painful as anticipated.
The '405 Improvement Project' is to satisfy Measure K that was passed by OC voters demanding at least one more lane in each direction on the 405. Studies are in place on three build alternative. 1. Add a lane each way costing $1.3 billion. 2. Add two lanes each way costing $1.4 billion 3. Add one General Passenger land and one HOV lane at a cost of $1.7 billion. Seems they are leaning towards number 1 at the moment. They are looking for public input. Visit their website here.
Lastly, Gladys Kaiser of the Parks & Recreation Department gave a summary of all the many activities and events offered through the city during their 100 Days of Summer Program. Stearns Park area residents asked for some type of concert to return this year. Remember, Los Altos gets just one Municipal Concert on Tuesday July 2 at Whaley Park, so be sure not to miss it. Also, because July 4th falls on a Thursday the Municipal will be performing at Marina Stadium that evening. You can visit www.100daysofsummer.org for a daily update of events.
So I will end where I started. Be sure to mark your calendars for the Fantastic Diamond Concert, because I promise you, it will be fantastic!
Again, I apologize for the late delivery of this update but I hope you found it helpful.
