Be Successful - Write
Your own Obituary!
I write the following as a novice, without the luxury of time to of do extensive research, so please forgive my errors all my Jewish readers.
In last week's newspaper there was an analogy of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur by local Long Beach Rabbi David Cantor. The story goes that the inventor of dynamite, Alfred Noble's obituary was written prematurely so he was around to see the headline, "The Merchant of Death Has Died". Nobel set about to change that legacy and as we know established the Nobel Peace Prize with his vast fortune.
The main idea of the holy day is that it is the day of judgement, and "It forces you to confront your own mortality" said Cantor.
The practice of confronting your own mortality is also an exercise recommended in Stephen Covey's book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People", which is to write your own obituary.
My mom's famous lesson was "don't do anything you wouldn't want written in the newspaper" but perhaps the lesson should also include, "and do things that you would want written in a newspaper"!
