The 67th Annual Catalina Ski Race is a Whale of an Event

A Story by Michele Kreinheder | Updated 08/2/2015 3:03am

62 Miles. That is the length of the course of the Catalina Ski Race that starts and ends at the Queen Mary. But what will really knock your socks off is the time it took the top finishers to complete the 62 miles. Try 46 min 36.76 sec, which means the skier's average speed was 79.809 miles/hour! On water! Also the second place finisher's time was 46 min 36.78 sec. That had to be an unbelievably exciting finish. So if that isn't exciting enough, the picture below illustrates just how exciting this race can get. The whale was photographed from an overhead helicopter. This race has been going on for 67 years and draws racers from around the globe. Why go to Pamplona to run with the bulls when you can ski with the whales in Long Beach!
