I have spent a few afternoons canvassing for Daryl this week. Overall the reception and feedback as been encouragingly in favor of Daryl but there have been the few voters who were casting in the other direction. In each case I tried my best to find out where they thought Daryl was lacking.
In each case I had a logical argument as to why they should reconsider their vote.
One gentleman had spoke to the opponent about doing corporate sponsorship fund raising. This is actually a page out of Daryl’s platform. The current elected officials want to increase the Utility Users Tax to help with Long Beach’s budget shortfall. Daryl says that all option should be exhausted prior to increasing taxes. He feels we have not explore the corporate sponsorship avenue well enough.
One household said they are following Robert Garcia’s lead, who has endorsed the opponent. This district will give Garcia the crucial fifth vote he needs to get the Utility Users Tax through! I also counter will the fact that the Press-Telegram has endorsed Supernaw. The council positions are non-partisan, in theory, but in practice there is a huge democratic machine behind this contest. Patrick O’Donnell, our Democratic Assembly representative has also come out in favor of the opponent. The hand that feeds, must be fed.
One household voted just purely on mailers. The opponent has sent and will send more mailers than Daryl. Again, we are back to who is feeding who. Every person making phone calls and walking the precincts for Daryl are volunteers. I would bet money that many, if not most of the walkers for the opponent are being compensated.
Lastly, no one brought this up but I have to share this latest information on Daryl. When recently asked if he would continue the monthly Chat-with-Pat meetings at the Los Altos Library, Daryl responded that he would continue to have monthly community update meetings, but would like to move it to a more central location within the 4th district. Daryl cares about the entire 4th district and this is refreshing and important.
Also, the argument against Daryl’s too serious personality was put asunder at the Ecco’s Pizza Meet-n-Greet last Monday. He was relaxed and his stories made the packed room laugh.
Remember to vote on April 14. Hopefully you have weighed the options and have decided Daryl Supernaw is the right man for the job!
