4th District’s Daryl Supernaw’s February 2017 Community Meeting – Beach Streets, Airport and Library 60th Anniversary
Meeting started promptly at 5. Small crowd but that was probably due to the fact that last night’s 60th Anniversary Celebration at Los Altos Library packed the room. Librarian Gail Tweedt put a wonderful event together. First Claudine Burnett gave a list of interesting facts about the library and other 1957 events. Then Tim Grobaty read from his book “Growing Up in Long Beach”. Then various people shared their memories of the library. It was a super sweet night of happy memories and humbleness.
Tonight’s meeting started off with East Division Commander Liz Griffen’s update. Lots of stats given but best take away was “Decisions are Data Driven” so be sure to report crimes! We did have one neighbor who told about calling to report an intruder and how the police response was excellent.
Next Tasha Day, Manager of City Special Events and Jay Lopez, Beach Streets Developer spoke about the upcoming “Beach Streets University” on April 29. This is their 4th Beach Street event. This horseshoe 4 mile route runs from Atherton, from Palo Verde to Bellflower, north on Bellflower, east on Los Coyotes to Spring, and Spring to Studebaker.
Ride your bike or walk along the route. This is a great opportunity for local businesses to introduce themselves. Designated Hubs will have various forms of entertainment. There is a CSULB Hub in front of the pyramid and you know those clever students will rise to the occasion. A children’s Hub will be at Whaley Park north and the beer tent Hub will be at Whaley Park south. The ArtCenter is setting up a display to ride your bike around at the Los Coyotes/Spring Street intersection – how cool is that! Want to get off your bike to have lunch? No problem – There will be free bike valet!

Next Supernaw gave his update.
Storms caused damage but Supernaw did make sure a generator was in place as a back-up at pumping station.
Anaheim corridor is having new sewer pipes installed. There was a debate over who owned the pipes but Councilman Supernaw dug deep (no pun intended) and discovered the County was responsible.
February 16 was a busy day for Airport News.
First the Airport Advisory Committee voted to ask the Council to rescind their vote on International Airport decision. This is an unprecedented move and Supernaw said, “I don’t think this is going to fly, no pun intended.”
Second there were reports of area residents receiving telephone calls taking a survey on International decision. People jumped to the conclusion that someone was looking to make the International a ballot decision. Supernaw said this cannot happen as Airport decisions cannot be legislated. End of story on that one!
Measure H: The .25 percent tax to pay for homeless services cannot be applied in Long Beach because we are capped out at 9.75% but we do vote because this is a Los Angeles County Measure. Look for more information in 4th District Blog.
The last item discussed was the outcome of the vote on the City’s support of two advancing State bills that would create immigration sanctuary policies. Although speakers to the podium were calling for Long Beach to declare itself a Sanctuary City, that was never the agenda item. The Council’s motion was to “to support” the bills, which would allow Long Beach to have some input into the final version of the bill.
It was another short informative meeting. The biggest change was my chocolate chip cookies were replaced with homemade pink sprintz butter cookies. All in attendance agreed they liked the change.
