When it was time for a front yard make-over of our Long Beach home in the Los Altos area we decided to call the experts.
Twenty plus years ago, installing water thirsty flowering plants was our spring ritual and they looked great with my country cottage theme, but as we all know that custom came to a logical end. Moving to a drought tolerant landscape while retaining my much beloved cottage vibe was beyond our skill set so we started a hunt for a landscape expert.
So how do you find an expert you can trust to work with your vision, when you are not even sure what your are envisioning? For us it took a little bit of work and a lot of luck. While my husband was home doing research on the internet, I was keeping my eyes peeled for landscaping that appealed to me. One day while dropping flyers in a Long Beach neighborhood for an Open House I stumbled upon a nicely landscaped yard with a sign advertising the contractor. When I got home that day my husband told me he had made an appointment with Roxanne Dean of Star Landscape Design for an initial consultation. Unbelievably it was the same company I had found that day. I took it as a sign that it was meant to be.
I won’t bore you with all the details but Roxanne Dean was able to take what little direction I gave her and deliver to me a front yard I enjoy more as time goes on. Roxanne is a landscape contractor, meaning she brings in the landscape, the hardscape, and the woodworker subcontractors. She has the creative vision and business sense to get the job done. As with any remodeling there are challenges, miscues and small frustrations but her results make it all worth it. Oh, and she isn’t inexpensive but she is definitely worth every cent. And just as with any contractor, make sure you are happy with her subs, and if things start to go south, let her know. She is one busy gal but doesn’t leave you hanging out to dry when problems arise Click here for Yelp Reviews or for more fun follow Star Landscape on Facebook.
Here are a few helpful hints and insights:
Take a tour of Dean’s recent lawn installations. They will give you ideas for your own lawn.
Take advantage of Long Beach Lawn-to-Garden program. Dean will help walk you through this process and delivery the drawings to the water department.
Be a stickler about making sure they have killed and removed the old lawn.
You will need to weed. Think about retaining your monthly mow and blow guy but shift the work to weeding.
If you are pouring concrete I strongly urge you to look into using a Topcast finish. This is difficult for me to explain in words and even more difficult to show in pictures but I can’t say strongly enough how much I love this finish. It brings the sand component of cement to the surface giving it a smooth soft visual appeal and makes it less slippery when wet.
Install some type of fencing. For whatever reason drought tolerant seems to work best when a fence is included.
